DIY - Tampon Cases!

Okay, Okay, I know it's the Sabbath. I was just organizing my photos from the last couple months (that's restful, right?) and found these that I snapped as I was creating Tampon/Pad cases for the Young Women and thought I'd share. Basically, you just need a rectangle of fabric that you can fold in on both sides to make pockets long enough to hold your feminine supplies. You'll also want to hem your sides: zig-zag then iron them down first. I used leftover upholstery material from making my couch cushion slipcovers. It was a good weight - something heavier than cotton is ideal. You'll also need little squares of velcro if you desire for your closure. Good luck!

One comment on my giveaway made the very valid point that "I never understood the aprons that don't cover the top half cuz that's where the bacon splaaaaters (thanks, Supersonicjan)". SO what is the point of a Hostess Apron anyway?

I designed the giveaway apron to hold change for a boutique I sold at. That way I wouldn't have bulging jeans pockets full of $1 bills or have to fish around in my purse. This is the beauty of pockets! I made 2 aprons, I'm giving one away and one is for sale for only $15 in my Etsy shop OR my Artfire shop so if you don't win, don't fret!

Use it for a gardening apron! The pockets are PERFECT for seed packets, tools and gloves.

DIY - Tutus!

THE must-have dress-up and daydream fashion item for toddler to tween, tutus have been popping up like tulips at boutiques and online. Here's the way I made Millie's Easter tutu:

Sew a length of satin ribbon to each end of non-roll elastic cut to the size of your child's waist (that way it'll fit perfectly now but can stretch to grow with your child!)

Tie Tie Tie! I used about 1 yard by 6 inches of Tulle doubled over and tied onto the elastic.

Then keep tying! Bunch your tulle up so you create "poofiness" (is that even a real word?). Here I have two lengths of tulle - space - repeat...

Then I hand-stitched random petals onto some of the pieces...

And finished by tying green tulle lengths 2 at a time onto the empty spaces (total of 44 tulle lenghts; 22 yellow and 22 lime green for an almost-2-year-old size)... Millie loves it!

I just had to make a pink and purple one for Millie's best friend, too. It was a great General Conference craft!

I finished the ends of the Satin ribbon by cutting them in a "V" then sealing with Fray Check (best invention EVER).

DIY - Glass Magnets Revisited and Glass Tile Necklaces

Use the same technique as Glass Magnets (see previous post) to make sassy glass tile necklaces:

Cut out the paper (this paper can be found at JellybeanLab) FIRST though, rather than trimming later (I speak from experience):

You can even hold your little ones close to your heart (Mother's Day gifts, anyone?). Use E6000 rather than the Glossy Accents to attach your jewelry bail for a stronger hold.

DIY - Glass Magnets

I believe that talents should be shared and beauty spread. I have links to Nursing Cover and Ring Sling tutorials and other cool things (look under "DIY" on the sidebar) on this here blog, and I'm going to start sharing some DIY tips and tricks. Mother's Day Open House

The Mother's Day Open House last Thursday was so fun! Unfortunately, people either didn't have husbands home to watch sleeping kids, had husbands who wanted to spend time with them, didn't want to venture out, forgot, got lost, etc... which excuse would you like to use? We didn't have many customers. Actually, all our customers were relatives of the vendors, and we also visited each others' shops. I bought some more Scentsy scents (Have you smelled the new Pineapple Paradise?!) and made two Stampin' Up make and takes. At Lia Sophia there was a pretty sparkly ring I had fun trying on. I really enjoyed chatting with Kristy and Tonia from And "Sew" Forth. They have the CUTEST bags! Myself, I sold 4 Treasure Bags and 1 Nursing Cover. Not too shabby. And I made more money than I spent this time, definitely an improvement over the "Last Blast Bash Boutique"! Stephanie of Princess Me!, the organizer, and I talked about having a Spring Fling/Kids' Stuff show soon... Stay Tuned!

We are so excited to announce that the Commission has voted for a "Stay of Enforcement of Certain Testing and Certification Requirements of CPSIA" — which means that they are proposing a 1 year suspension of the burden of lead testing and certification while they take more time to review the rules and plan enforcement! All of your hard work is paying off (for the time being at least!). You wouldn't have to pay to do the certification and testing, though you are still liable if your products are found to have lead. We are so pleased that artisans and vintage sellers got their voices heard. Your hard work is not over; we must continue to play a role in advocating for small business people throughout the coming year.

CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements for Certain Products
Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger. These requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans.
Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote by the Commission provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements which go into effect on February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things. Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.
The decision by the Commission gives the staff more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted.
The stay will remain in effect until February 10, 2010, at which time a Commission vote will be taken to terminate the stay.
The stay does not apply to:
Four requirements for third-party testing and certification of certain children’s products subject to:
The ban on lead in paint and other surface coatings effective for products made after December 21, 2008;
The standards for full-size and non full-size cribs and pacifiers effective for products made after January 20, 2009;
The ban on small parts effective for products made after February 15, 2009; and
The limits on lead content of metal components of children’s jewelry effective for products made after March 23, 2009.
Certification requirements applicable to ATV’s manufactured after April 13, 2009.
Pre-CPSIA testing and certification requirements, including for: automatic residential garage door openers, bike helmets, candles with metal core wicks, lawnmowers, lighters, mattresses, and swimming pool slides; and
Pool drain cover requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.
The stay of enforcement provides some temporary, limited relief to the crafters, children’s garment manufacturers and toy makers who had been subject to the testing and certification required under the CPSIA. These businesses will not need to issue certificates based on testing of their products until additional decisions are issued by the Commission. However, all businesses, including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small businesses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards and similar requirements, including the lead and phthalates provisions of the CPSIA.
Handmade garment makers are cautioned to know whether the zippers, buttons and other fasteners they are using contain lead. Likewise, handmade toy manufacturers need to know whether their products, if using plastic or soft flexible vinyl, contain phthalates.
The stay of enforcement on testing and certification does not address thrift and second hand stores and small retailers because they are not required to test and certify products under the CPSIA. The products they sell, including those in inventory on February 10, 2009, must not contain more than 600 ppm lead in any accessible part. The Commission is aware that it is difficult to know whether a product meets the lead standard without testing and has issued guidance for these companies that can be found on our Web site.
The Commission trusts that State Attorneys General will respect the Commission's judgment that it is necessary to stay certain testing and certification requirements and will focus their own enforcement efforts on other provisions of the law, e.g. the sale of recalled products.

Still Standin'

Thanks to 2 wonderful women who purchased items from my Etsy Shop last week (Jennifer of Chicago and Susan of New York state), I am still in business and was inspired to renew my Business License for the year 2009 despite the CPSIA legislation taking effect in just a couple of weeks. My friend Beth also had the idea that perhaps I could continue to sell my items as "women's apparell." This is not a bad idea at all; the legislation reads that items that must be tested are those that are meant for "primary use by children under 12 years of age," and they are not the ones who use the slings or covers. I will probably have to take down the toy bags, which is too bad as that's what Susan bought from me. Jennifer bought some sassy flip-flops and I am excited to be able to continue selling those. I have a limited number, so if you want some let me know!

Thanks too to Diane, Sharleen and Jessica, who have all purchased from me locally! I love my customers!

Save handmade from the CPSIA!

Hi! Legislation was passed about the same time I started "milk made baby" (of course I'm only discovering this now though my business research was extensive) which will come into effect on February 10. It is called the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act and it will require third party testing for lead of all items produced for children under the age of 12. All items, whether made from plastic, paint or simple cotton fabric will be required to undergo batch testing and label items as certified. This will cost a minimum of $50 per item and I can't see charging $90 for a sling or $75 for a nursing cover! Created with mass marketers in mind, the act affects those (like me) who create individual handmade items as well, because of the prohibitive cost. Help support actions to amend this ridiculous act. I love October. It's the crunch of the leaves, the crisp of the air, the fact that my husband and I were married (4 years ago!) this month... I guess it's fitting that it took some of August and all of September to complete all the (only slightly obnoxious) steps necessary to receive the business license for my little company so that "milk made baby" could be "born" this month. Nursing Covers are made from high quality cotton fabrics. They are approximately 1 yard wide by 3/4 yard long with 18 inches of boning at the neck opening. 1 inch wide, long adjustable self-fabric neck tie secured with 2 silver D rings. Generous drape, allowing for discreet breastfeeding. May also be used as a sun shade over a stroller or a light blanket. Baby wearing in a ring sling promotes: bonding, reduced crying, healthy unlimited positioning, free arms for caregiver, walking, discreet nursing and a sun shade or warm wrap using the generous tail.

All "milk made baby" Ring Slings are triply reinforced with a wide shoulder for comfort and safety. Slings may be worn on either shoulder. Rings are 3" rings from SlingRings.com and are tested for strength and durability. Babies and toddlers LOVE to be "worn," but caregivers must use wisdom when wearing them. Please:

*Check for wear and tear prior to using your sling.
*Slings are meant for infants 6 pounds to 25 pounds in cradle or front carry and up to 35 pounds or 3 years in hip carry.
*Adjust sling prior to putting child in. Rethread if necessary. After child is in and an adjustment needs to be made, support the child with your free hand and pull the tail of the sling.
*Use wisdom. Don't cook or go near open flames while wearing your child. Bend at the knee to prevent falls. Watch wall corners, trees, and other obstacles to make certain no part of your child will be injured.
*Slings are not to be used in place of a car seat.
*Take time getting to know your sling and the way it feels best for you to carry your child. There is a learning curve, but it's worth it!
